17th Vikos Crossing 2026, “The Passage”

The Vikos Crossing is an activity of "The Land Beyond” that began sixteen years ago. Since then, it has consistently explored a central theme through the distance and perspective offered by the mountain landscape and the month of August, allowing for a freer, more generous and more unifying approach. It combines exploration, Epirus-inspired yet cosmopolitan gastronomy, physical activity, meaningful social interaction, and learning. The conference sessions on one hand and the hike through Vikos on the other, within Greece’s largest and greenest National Park, offer a profound and lasting breath of renewal for everyone — especially for those of us who spend long hours in offices, cars, in front of screens, and within the city, and who long for personal and collective reflection beyond everyday life, beyond the ordinary.

There are places that are not merely locations; they are passages. Passages that lead not only from one point to another, but deep into our very existence — into the pathways of the body, the brain, thought, soul, and spirit. Every passage carries within it the meaning of change, quest and trial. The 17th Vikos Crossing, organized in collaboration with "Imagine Heritage”, is an invitation to surrender ourselves to the power of passage. Our aim is the crossing of a unique natural and cultural landscape and the experience of the journey itself, where the natural, the spiritual, the hiking, the literary and the philosophical intertwine into a unified discovery. The passages traced upon the map become opportunities for dialogue with literature, memory, and imagination; each step becomes a reason for reflection, each silence a space for encountering oneself.

This program is an invitation to pause at these thresholds and surrender to the atmosphere of the place; to feel the power of physical passage, but also the silent presence of the "passage” within ourselves. Our goal is not simply the traversal of a landscape, but the experience of the journey itself, where the natural, the spiritual and the literary are interwoven into a single act of discovery.

As every year, the Volunteer Award 2026 will be presented for the sixth consecutive year. The 17th Vikos Crossing also coincides with the full operation of the "Archontiko Zagoriou” Memorial — an architectural landmark dating back to 1750 that has now become part of "The Land Beyond” — along with newly designed outdoor spaces created especially for those who cherish "walking & talking.”

What matters is not how many times someone falls, but how many times they rise again — and above all, how determined they are to remain standing. Performance is not what counts either, but rather the experience of the gorge itself: the moments of solitude, of reflection and contemplation beyond the ordinary, the «γνώθι σαυτόν» ("know thyself”), the generous and magnanimous spirit that emerges, the discovery of the origins of beings, biodiversity, foraging, survival, interdependence, self-awareness, and reconciliation — the way nature elevates the mind through measure, harmony, humility, slowness, attentiveness and every kind of wandering. After all, only by finding yourself in the deepest and darkest ravine can you truly perceive the magic of standing upon the mountain peak.
